TukuTuku Panel
This product is created in collaboration with Pakohe Whanganui Ltd.
Tukutuku is a traditional Māori art form of ornamental lattice-work paneling that plays a crucial role in the cultural and architectural heritage of New Zealand. These intricate panel designs are most commonly found in wharenui (meeting houses), where they serve both decorative and symbolic purposes.
This innovative feature brings mana whenua art practices into city centers, with criss-cross perspex pieces that slot easily into panels, mimicking traditional tukutuku weaving techniques. By allowing community members to interact with and create the artwork, the installation transforms public spaces into living cultural experiences that celebrate and preserve Māori artistic heritage.
The information panels at the bottom can be created alongside local mana whenua to ensure local context is honoured.
conversation station kit
conversation station kit
This video shows an early prototype of The Conversation Station, a playful antidote to digital isolation. This innovative public installation is designed to reignite the lost art of face-to-face conversation in an era of increasing disconnection and digital distraction.
At its heart, the experience is delightfully simple. A prominent button invites passersby to "push to start a conversation," triggering hidden speakers embedded in nearby seating. A whimsical voice then guides participants to spin a wheel of questions, prompting meaningful dialogue with a stranger.
More than just an interactive art piece, The Conversation Station is a gentle social intervention. It creates unexpected moments of human connection, transforming public spaces into platforms for spontaneous, authentic conversation.

MIGHTY RIVER MARBLE RUN
MIGHTY RIVER MARBLE RUN
Whanganui's unique marble run demonstrates how public spaces can honor local landscapes. Situated in a diagonal car park, this installation uses the road's slope to trace a marble's symbolic journey from mountains to sea, inspired by local Iwi advisors' connection to the awa.
Marble runs can be powerful urban design tools, celebrating a location's natural features through interactive, playful experiences. As urban designers know, where children find excitement, adults will inevitably follow. By creating engaging "breadcrumbs" that attract families and spark curiosity, these installations transform ordinary streets into memorable destinations and journeys.
Crafted from durable colored concrete and featuring a gumball machine marble dispenser, this run invites people of all ages to connect with the environment in a creative, unexpected way.
Community designed activity paths
Our approach brings communities together to design vibrant, interactive pathways that transform everyday journeys. By collaborating directly with local students, we create bespoke activity paths that reflect the imagination and desires of those who use them most.
Using durable road marking paint applied by local artists, we transform students' imaginative designs into long-wearing, high-quality play spaces. The result is more than just a path - it's a dynamic, intergenerational playground that invites everyone, young and old, to play, interact, and reimagine their urban environment.
